A Room Fit for a Pug
August 16th, 2010
There's Rosie checking out the king-sized bed at the Hotel Monaco in downtown Portland. Umm ... it was the only time she got on that wonderful bed.
When it comes to my pug, I make no bones about my devotion to her. Simply put: I love that little ankle-biter.
So when I got the chance to spoil Rosie with a night at the Hotel Monaco recently, I leaped at the chance. Little did I know that Trip Advisor would later name the Hotel Monaco – a Kimpton property in downtown Portland – as the second most pet-friendly hotel in the U.S.
After staying, however, I can assure you it is a well-deserved honor.
From the doggy basket full of goodies and an organic dog treat, to the best toy I’ve ever found for an energetic pug excited about her first night on the town, to the clean and comfortable doggie bed Rosie slept on that night, it was the most fun I’ve had with her away from home. And the first time I didn’t feel compelled to smuggle a pet past the hotel front desk like a piece of contraband.
On the contrary, we walked right in like we owned the place. Well, at least Rosie did, but she thinks she owns everything, so no big surprise there. I was still a bit uneasy as I’d never “legally” brought a pet to a hotel before. All my fears were soon set aside the Hotel Monaco’s Director of Pet Relations – an amiable yellow lab named Timmy – greeted us upon arrival. Sniffing ensued.
Soon we were eating room service and relaxing in a beautiful suite. Rosie played, then slept, then played, then slept some more. I think there was a dog treat in there too. For her (and me) it was about as perfect as it gets. Portland’s love of pooches is no secret, but it’s properties such as the Hotel Monaco and the way they care for your dog like they’re a person that makes visiting Portland with your pet such a treat.
