Here it is, November already! And that sets me to thinking about holiday gatherings, about homemade cranberry sauce and Hood River’s own Tofurky … and about finding a few special gifts for a few special people.
Thankfully, it’s also time for our pop-up shops to sprout downtown. Alongside Portland Saturday Market, these collectives of local artists, artisans and fashion designers help holiday shoppers find carefully crafted gifts for everyone on our list. Here’s a look at this year’s crop, which opened on Tuesday:
• A favorite indie emporium, Crafty Wonderland, showcases the work of more than 80 local artists in jewelry, clothing, art and housewares. Have some fun with their wacky holiday photo booth! (802 S.W. 10th)
• Fashionistas will exult in finds at Sons and Daughters, featuring designer vintage clothing alongside the best from Portland brands. (902 S.W. Morrison)
• Downtown Artistry showcases art of all types — handcrafted ceramics, jewelry, toys and wrapping paper – and a workspace to make your own cards and gifts. (940 S.W. Morrison)
• Watch designers create one-of-a-kind pieces in their temporary workshops at cloth/gold FACTORY. The art and design books in their reading room are perfect for shopper relaxation and re-inspiration. (723 S.W. Salmon)
Not to be outdone, terrific downtown boutiques such as Alder & Co., Canoe, Radish Underground and Tender Loving Empire (scene of this post’s photos) present an evolving collection of local and international fashion, accessories, housewares and folk art all year ‘round.
‘Tis the season to celebrate the bounty of fine art, craft and design in our fair city – and to spread the good cheer!
