Summer, sadly, is gone, but the good news is that Portland’s best season, fall, is here with its warm, sunny days and cool, clear nights. The ideal way to get lost in autumn’s splendor is at The Maize at the Pumpkin Patch.
Located on Sauvie Island, a rural escape just 13 miles north of downtown Portland, the Corn Maize offers visitors five acres of physical and mental challenges. But it’s not all about getting lost in nature two 16-foot observation bridges provide for picturesque panoramas, with great views of the island and Mount Hood, as well as the maze itself. Every year, the cornfield is carved with a different pattern, and the 2012 design a depiction of the Portlandia statue “putting a bird” on a pumpkin is sure to stump maze-goers while delighting fans of public art and wacky TV alike. The maze is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day in October, staying open until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Speaking of after-dark hours, the Haunted Maize puts a spooky twist on cornfield escapades, with swamp goblins, costumed actors and creepy special effects. Running Friday and Saturday nights in October from 7-10 p.m., it’s a real scream, and a family-friendly way to rustle up some Halloween spirit.
