Courtney S. Ries
I'm Courtney and I'm originally from Apple Valley, Minnesota, which, despite its name, has no apple trees.
Inspired by friends with accents, I ventured out of the country my freshman year of college and never looked back. In 2004, I road-tripped out to Portland to work as a travel writer, managing to call AAA not once, but twice, in a period of five days.
I now help promote PDX as the marketing manager and love playing tour guide to all of Portland's amazing sites. I'm a sucker for the North Portland rose garden, riding my bike in the West Hills and anything that can be drunk or consumed.

In 2009, March Madness returned to Portland for the first time in more than 25 years. Tickets to the match-ups at the Rose Garden – home of the Trailblazers – sold out, thanks to some almost-local teams like Washington hitting the court. Fast forward three years and the Rose City is once again hosting early [...]

The holiday season just got a little merrier in Downtown Portland with the openings of several new businesses. Some are local businesses, some are national, but all of them offer tax-free shopping and dining. Nike Portland: Feel like you’re walking back into your high school gym at the new concept store from Nike, an Oregon-based [...]

Although it’s only October, I’m one of those people who shops for holiday gifts year-round. Sometimes, that means that I have to find that perfect gift twice, because I get so excited to give the first gift that I can’t hang on to it all the way to December. Thankfully, there’s no sales tax in [...]

With warmer weather and sunnier skies ahead, my thoughts turn to one of my favorite summer treats: ice cream. At Portland grocery stores, it’s easy to find the big national brands, as well as a plethora of locally made treats. Other made-in-Portland ice creams appear only at their dedicated establishments, where you can pick up [...]

Although the opening weekend for the Portland Farmers Market in March is the official start to the fresh food season, I find my tastes align more with berries than with Swiss chard. As such, I always eagerly anticipate late spring, when the first sweet delicacies appear. May and June are also two of the best foodie [...]

Personally, I think that Portland has a lot of perks. There’s the great tax-free shopping, the quick-and-easy access to the great outdoors (hello Forest Park!), the drool-worthy culinary and liquid libation scene and above all, the welcoming buzz of activity. Portland Perks is also the name of Travel Portland’s exclusive hotel package. It includes your choice [...]

Sometimes, the winter weather in Portland can be a bit … dicey. Fortunately for us, we have a great arts scene that provides some cozy distractions, from festivals (the Jazz Festival and the Portland International Film Festival are on right now) to season-long offerings from companies like the Oregon Ballet Theatre, Oregon Symphony and White Bird [...]
