I’m Deborah Wakefield, vice president of communications and public relations for Travel Portland. Other than a brief stint as a reporter covering state government (yes, nearly as exciting as it sounds), I’ve spent the bulk of my professional career in tourism P.R., including 10 years on the frenetically paced East Coast. Biggest adjustments in moving cross country to Portland: getting acclimated to a calmer, more relaxed work style and weather reports that almost never include the word “humidity.” My husband, Mark, and I live on the edge of a forested area that’s just 15 minutes from downtown. We often look out our kitchen window to see deer, wild rabbits, raccoons – even the occasional bobcat – ambling across our patio.

A Sweet Budget Wedding

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Voodoo Too is the eastside sibling to downtown Portland’s [...]

If the festival can draw more than [...]

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Portland’s summer temps don’t usually climb into the 90s, but on one of those very rare, very hot days, I happened to be walking along Northeast Alberta Street in Portland’s Alberta Arts District. And there it was … summer nirvana: a sign proclaiming to all who might enter that this shop was “Always Cellar Temperature.” [...]

Portland’s Official City Doughnut

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

It’s official.  Portland has its very own city doughnut – the Portland Creme, officially recognized via unanimous resolution of Portland’s City Council. Our pals down at Voodoo Doughnut, a Voodoo-themed doughnut shop known for its crazy concoctions, created the idea behind Portland Creme. I say “idea,” because the Portland Creme is basically a Boston Cream [...]

On the Road Again

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Summer may conjure up visions of beaches and bikinis for some, but for me it’s Shakespeare. Every year, as we did last week, my husband and I make our annual trek south to Ashland for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Because our visit coincided with the opening weekend for OSF’s summer season, we packed three of [...]
