Greg Newland
I lead Travel Portland's marketing/communications team and count myself incredibly lucky to get to work with such terrific colleagues and partners, and to get to enjoy -- and market -- such an amazing array of experiences. Among my favorites: hiking in the Gorge; crabbing on the coast; fishing with my pops; soaking up hoppy IPAs; attending the occasional show at Portland Center Stage or Artists Rep; schlurping oysters on the half shell (especially the tasty li'l Gigamotos); catching live music with my friend AJ; and following Blazers basketball and Northwestern football.
My wife, Roberta Aylward, is an artist; we live in Southeast Portland with our son, Luke, and dog, Eudora.

“Reason and love keep little company together nowadays,” brays long-eared Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. But there are, in fact, many reasons to love Portland Center Stage’s charming production of Shakespeare’s famous comedy, which runs through Dec. 23. Rather than make an (ahem) ass of myself by trying to impersonate a theater critic, I’ll happily leave the heavy lifting to Bob [...]

Random notes on some recent experiences — an exhibition, a play and a hike – filled with dramatic peaks (both figurative and literal) that are rooted in history and culture, and enriched by the written word: In his insightful review of The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece — on view at the Portland Art Museum through Jan. 6 – Bob [...]

If creativity is Portland’s currency, then the coming weeks are an embarrassment of riches, with back-to-back-to-back festivals that celebrate the many expressions of Portland’s creative culture: indie music (MusicFestNW, Sept. 5-9), contemporary art (Time-Based Art Festival, Sept. 6-16) and food and drink (Feast Portland, Sept. 20-23) — not to mention art & technology (XOXO, Sept. 13-16) [...]

Sunday, July 29, 2012 – With the crowd-pleasing Oregon Brewers Festival in full swing just a few blocks away on the waterfront, an underage crowd soaked up a decidedly different kind of liquid refreshment at another summertime staple of downtown: the fountain at Director Park. Two oysters, one tray, one memorable stop along the coast. I sampled these these super-sized bivalves at Jetty Fishery, whose other (and less credulity-stretching) offerings include live Dungeness crab, and boat rentals for adventures on Nehalem Bay. Share on Facebook Tweet about it

The week before last was a big one for local chefs, who gathered in New York City for the May 21 launch party for Feast Portland, the much-anticipated food and drink festival that will take place Sept. 20-23 in downtown Portland. New York media, chefs and tastemakers descended upon the party, which highlighted Oregon beer, wine [...]

Spurred by an article in the new Travel Portland magazine, Bert and I spent a recent afternoon on North Williams Avenue, a vibrant district of retailers and restaurants — and one of the newer additions to Portland’s rich tapestry of neighborhoods. Our first stop was Lodekka, a vintage dress shop that’s housed inside a double-decker bus. [...]

To celebrate his birthday, my buddy Googs and I checked out one of the latest – and most ballyhooed – additions to the east side’s dining scene: The Woodsman, located a couple of doors down from the original Stumptown Coffee on Southeast Division Street. Upon entering, we were greeted by a cool wood-paneled interior and an impressive display [...]
