I lead Travel Portland's marketing/communications team and count myself incredibly lucky to get to work with such terrific colleagues and partners, and to get to enjoy -- and market -- such an amazing array of experiences. Among my favorites: hiking in the Gorge; crabbing on the coast; fishing with my pops; soaking up hoppy IPAs; attending the occasional show at Portland Center Stage or Artists Rep; schlurping oysters on the half shell (especially the tasty li'l Gigamotos); catching live music with my friend AJ; and following Blazers basketball and Northwestern football. My wife, Roberta Aylward, is an artist; we live in Southeast Portland with our son, Luke, and dog, Eudora.

The Woodsman

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

To celebrate his birthday, my buddy Googs and I checked out one of the latest – and most ballyhooed – additions to the east side’s dining scene: The Woodsman, located a couple of doors down from the original Stumptown Coffee on Southeast Division Street. Upon entering, we were greeted by a cool wood-paneled interior and an impressive display [...]

Giving Voice to Portland

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Check out our new radio ads, in which the City of Roses — brought to life by Live Wire radio’s Courtenay Hameister — invites Seattleites to come down for a different kind of weekend getaway, and different kind of discount: $72 off a two-night stay. In these spots, produced by our friends at Sockeye, Courtenay gives our neighbors [...]

Cute kid alert: I was digging through my e-mail and came across this photo from my colleague Megan, whose daughters enjoyed a holiday shopping spree in downtown Portland. Share on Facebook Tweet about it

Sharing Recipes, and a Chance to Win

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

Working with our friend Mike Thelin — co-founder of the much-anticipated food and drink festival, Feast Portland (Sept. 20-23, 2012) — we recently wrapped up some fun video shoots at three leading restaurants, which shared their recipes for chocolate hazelnut toffee (Country Cat), butternut squash soup (Metrovino) and a seasonal Manhattan (Nostrana). Visit the “Flavors of Portland” tab on our [...]

Mucca Osteria: Italian for Just Right

Monday, December 19th, 2011

Had a great night at one of downtown’s newest restaurants, Mucca Osteria, where Bert and I recently shared a nice pasta dish, samplings of wine and a lovely parade of antipasti from chef Simone Saviano: melon and prosciutto, organic greens, thinly sliced medallions of seared lamb, and an artful stack of heirloom tomatoes with mozzarella. [...]

Naomi Pomeroy: a Beast of a BLT

Monday, October 24th, 2011

I’m really digging the bite-sized TV spots that Wieden + Kennedy has produced for Oregon Bounty, the state’s annual celebration of culinary travel. My favorite clip: a salute to the state’s farm-to-table ethos, featuring Portland chef (and “Top Chef” alumna) Naomi Pomeroy of Beast. Hungry for more? Check out these regional itineraries, then enter to win one [...]

Tell Your Story: What Makes This Place Great

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Our friends at TriMet, the region’s transit provider, have launched a cool new website: On What Makes This Place Great, locals share their stories — and list some of their favorite restaurants, attractions and experiences, all of which are accessible by public transportation. The site features features Portlanders like Emily (pictured), whose favorite neighborhood hangouts include Mississippi Studios, [...]

Our food scene has bloggers buzzing – and TV audiences salivating, thanks to Travel Oregon’s new spots that feature the range of the state’s culinary experiences: from food carts to wine, from Dungies to truffles, and from farm to table. Oregon Bounty, the state’s culinary promotion, runs through Nov. 6. Planning your trip? Before you come: Check [...]

Schlurp! A New Spot for Oysters

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Feeling inspired (thanks, Eric), I marked my first lunch at the new RingSide Fish House by ordering (or, to be more accurate, inhaling) some  tasty Netarts oysters on the half shell. Here’s a half-dozen things to love about the restaurant: it’s a terrific addition to the downtown retail core; the dining room offers a cool view of Director Park and its [...]
