I lead Travel Portland's marketing/communications team and count myself incredibly lucky to get to work with such terrific colleagues and partners, and to get to enjoy -- and market -- such an amazing array of experiences. Among my favorites: hiking in the Gorge; crabbing on the coast; fishing with my pops; soaking up hoppy IPAs; attending the occasional show at Portland Center Stage or Artists Rep; schlurping oysters on the half shell (especially the tasty li'l Gigamotos); catching live music with my friend AJ; and following Blazers basketball and Northwestern football.
My wife, Roberta Aylward, is an artist; we live in Southeast Portland with our son, Luke, and dog, Eudora.

Our friends at TriMet, the region’s transit provider, have launched a cool new website: On What Makes This Place Great, locals share their stories — and list some of their favorite restaurants, attractions and experiences, all of which are accessible by public transportation. The site features features Portlanders like Emily (pictured), whose favorite neighborhood hangouts include Mississippi Studios, [...]

Our food scene has bloggers buzzing – and TV audiences salivating, thanks to Travel Oregon’s new spots that feature the range of the state’s culinary experiences: from food carts to wine, from Dungies to truffles, and from farm to table. Oregon Bounty, the state’s culinary promotion, runs through Nov. 6. Planning your trip? Before you come: Check [...]

Feeling inspired (thanks, Eric), I marked my first lunch at the new RingSide Fish House by ordering (or, to be more accurate, inhaling) some tasty Netarts oysters on the half shell. Here’s a half-dozen things to love about the restaurant: it’s a terrific addition to the downtown retail core; the dining room offers a cool view of Director Park and its [...]

Here’s a photo of Bert last month at Haystack Rock (yes, that’s my finger on the right); this popular spot, located in Cannon Beach, is a perfect day trip from Portland — about 80 miles each way. Not in a hurry to get back to town? After wiping the sand from your feet, make tracks to [...]

Downtown Portland is a vibrant place that never ceases to surprise — even around 9:45 on a Saturday night in mid-July, when I happened upon this scene in front of the Nordstrom on Broadway: self-described “street band” All the Apparatus, wrapping up an energetic (and, judging from the assembled crowd of dancers and head-nodders, enthusiastically [...]

Our CFO, Ron Melton, passed along an engaging blog post by Rich Grant, a former colleague from Visit Denver who recaps a wide-ranging trip to Oregon and locates the soul of Portland in the “three B’s, which this ‘city of roses’ can claim above any other American urban center: beer, bicycles and bookstores.” Even the [...]

Took a lovely tour of the Oregon Zoo yesterday with some colleagues and snapped this photo of the elephants, which were acting pretty frisky. Obligatory marketing push: Out-of-town visitors can save more than 25 percent off admission to the zoo, museums, gardens and more with our online attractions passes. Obligatory personal note: After this visit, I’m [...]

Flanked by Violetta and Elephants Delicatessen, downtown Portland’s Director Park — once the site of a parking lot — is a popular lunch spot for shoppers, office workers, people-watchers and (ahem) snap-happy parents chasing their toddlers through the fountain. For more downtown adventures and ideas, check out downtownportland.org. Share on Facebook Tweet about it

I’ll be crossing a few items off my Oregon bucket list this week, as I drive to Eastern Oregon for a conference. With apologies to the Blue Mountains, the Wallowas and Hells Canyon, what I’m most excited to see are the Painted Hills, located about 200 miles southeast of Portland, just off Hwy. 26. Here’s hoping they feel as otherworldly [...]

Yes, we’ve seen the bicycle frames that decorate the popular, kid-friendly and ec0-minded Hopworks Urban Brewery on Southeast Powell Boulevard. But for further proof of Hopworks’ commitment to bike culture (and, I suppose, a sign that my uncle is a too-willing photo subject), check out this picture of the banana-seat headrests affixed above the urinals in the men’s room.
