Jeff Hammerly
Jeff is manager for international tourism, Asia, at Travel Portland. Most useful for the reader, when trying to place into context Jeffrey's sometimes bizzare posts, would be to reflect forgivingly on the fact that Jeff lived for more than a decade in Japan. While he spent most of that time as a televsion news producer, Jeff also did time as a monk in a Zen Buddhist monestary, an experience which, in its brevity (several months) and lack of ultimate spiritual catharsis (un-satori), probably contributed to his difficulty in articulating a clear point of view on nearly any subject. You name a subject, and Jeff can inarticulate a clear point of view, or perhaps articulate an unclear point of view. In any case, thank you, gentle reader, for your patience.

I recently met up with an old college friend for the first time in about 20 years. We first went to Japan together in 1976; she’s been there pretty much ever since. We caught up … marriages, kids, yadda, yadda, yadda. She told me about her career in Kyoto. It sounded very impressive. Impressive, but [...]
