I’m Karen Martwick, editor at Travel Portland. I consider myself a naturalized Oregonian (and recovering Californian); both of my parents were born here, and I’ve lived in Portland for 19 years. A lot has changed in that time, but the city is only getting better. People here share common values — reverence for nature, respect for each other and the belief that anything you dream can be accomplished — that complement the city’s beauty and make every day an opportunity for new and unexpected experiences. I love to travel (Barcelona is my second favorite city in the world) and I love to write — especially about my No. 1 city: Portland!

Appetizing Oregon and Feast Portland

Portland loves food. And even in this perpetually dining-obsessed city, this month is something special. The countdown is on to Portland’s first international food festival, Feast Portland, Sept. 20-23. The fest is made up of many different events (tastings, dinners, lectures, classes) — several of which are already sold out. But, whether you’re feeling peckish [...]

Smile, It’s Summer Concert Season

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

In Portland, it’s an annual tradition to complain about how late summer is. What can I say? It takes a lot of clouds to make the rain that keeps our trees green and our flowers abloom, so by July, we’re all more than ready for a long string of warm, sunny days. Luckily, summer always [...]

Every summer, Portland’s neighborhoods — from east to west, north to south — put on their own hyper-local parties. Food Cart Frenzy

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Last Saturday, I — along with 3,000 other folks — indulged in the annual Portland food cart festival known as Eat Mobile. Three thousand people + 52 carts = lots of lines. But each wait was rewarded with a delicious sample. I focused on trying out new-to-me carts and came away with several favorites: Fuego [...]
