My curious palate has taken me on travels round the world, and, as a result, I'm constantly hungry to try new things. So I moved to the right place. The Portland area is home to wonderful culinary innovators, inspired by an abundance of produce that is locally grown. New restaurants open all the time here. I love exploring the source of all of this that can be found just outside of the city -- farms, wineries, distilleries, bakeries and breweries. And of course, it's so much fun to share what I've found!

Forktown Food Tours, which guides visitors on charming culinary journeys through Portland’s neighborhoods, has added a new tour exploring the city’s core. Inspired by all of the businesses that have recently opened in the area, Forktown now offers culinary walking tours of downtown from Thursday through Sunday. The tours showcase the different styles of eateries that make [...]

How often do you have the chance to hold something as cute as this, as fluffy, as special? Rarely. But I was the kid in school who would have been the last to join 4-H club, and I chickened out. This sweet thing was just one of the many cuties I got to see up [...]

I used to go to the Sasquatch music festival every summer in the Gorge, but right here in Portland’s backyard, Pickathon keeps getting better and better. This year’s lineup looks incredible (Neko Case, Blitzen Trapper, Dr. Dog, Vieux Farka Touré, Typhoon, the Cave Singers, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, and dozens more), and tickets for the [...]

To me, the ultimate Oregon vacation combines amazing food and drink with outdoor exploration in this spectacular natural wonderland. Our Travel Portland team had the chance to guide the editor of Washington Flyer magazine on such an experience last May, and he made this great video to share what he found. It’s that time of [...]

For the first time, Oregon’s governor has declared May “Oregon Wine Month.” But fabulous wine events will be sprouting up throughout the spring in and around Portland, from late March on. Here are a few to check out: The North Willamette Vintners’ annual Wine Trail Weekend (March 31-April 1), with events and sampling at 24 [...]

A couple of weeks ago, I had a perfect day. I joined an all-day snowshoe tour with Pedal Bike Tours, which took us from downtown Portland up to Timberline for about an hour of downhill snowshoeing through some gorgeous and varied terrain, followed by a ski-lift ride up the mountain (what a view!), and a lavish [...]

Okay, so maybe you won’t go wine tasting every day, but in Oregon, you could go wine tasting on any day. The winter is one of the best times to do it, because the tasting rooms are quieter, and you’re likely to find the winemaker around during their slow season to chat about their wines. [...]

All year down in Portland we look up at Mount Hood’s beautiful snowy peak. In the wintertime it’s at its brightest, covered in a blanket of powder. Of course there’s skiing and snowboarding for all of you speed demons, but snowshoeing is such a peaceful way to spend time with friends on the mountain with [...]

I was charmed and surprised by a recent walk through downtown Troutdale. Often overlooked by those zooming through the Gorge, or overshadowed by nearby McMenamins Edgefield, this section of the Historic Columbia River Highway feels like an old-time Main Street, and is a picturesque holiday shopping destination. Here’s what I found: 1. Troutdale General Store: [...]
