My curious palate has taken me on travels round the world, and, as a result, I'm constantly hungry to try new things. So I moved to the right place. The Portland area is home to wonderful culinary innovators, inspired by an abundance of produce that is locally grown. New restaurants open all the time here. I love exploring the source of all of this that can be found just outside of the city -- farms, wineries, distilleries, bakeries and breweries. And of course, it's so much fun to share what I've found!

There’s Something About Pirates and Portland

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Like many others, when I first moved here, I noticed bumper stickers all around town printed with the words, “Eat a Lime.” Curious, but writing it off as one of those quirky “Keep Portland Weird” things, I didn’t think much about it. It turns out that this is the slogan for local “pirate rock” band [...]

Get Outside! My Top Ten for Summer

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Summer has arrived in Portland, and I’ve made my list of the top ten things to do while the sun is shining and the weather is warm. 1. Ride the Banks-Vernonia Trail — this is the first summer that all 21 miles are fully paved. 2. Take in a movie under the stars, either in [...]

Pickathon and the Decemberists – Stars Under the Stars

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Am I the only one who’s been listening to the Decemberists’ latest album nonstop since it came out in January? The Portland band’s most recent record, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, is filled with songs at the same time fresh and nostalgic, channeling musicians like Tom Petty and R.E.M. in the band’s distinctive style. [...]

The Dalles Discoveries

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

If you’ve only seen The Dalles from Highway 84, you have no idea what it really looks like. Or what it feels like, or what you might find there. When I took a day trip there last week from Portland, I was surprised to make many pleasant discoveries. These are my top five: 1. The Dalles only [...]

Follow the Wine Trail This Weekend

Monday, April 4th, 2011

As wine lovers know, Portland is very lucky to have the Willamette Valley in its backyard. This weekend (April 9-10), the North Willamette Vintners (a group of over 20 wineries, many in Washington County, just to the west of the city), will open their doors to visitors for behind-the-scenes tours, special release tastings, barrel sampling [...]

From Portland to Japan

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Like those around the world, Portlanders have been shocked and saddened by the recent disaster in Japan. Portland has a sister city relationship with Sapporo, and below are just a few of many ways that our community is supporting our friends in Japan. • Japan-related organizations in Portland have joined forces to provide financial aid [...]

Winter Refreshment on Mount Hood

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

When you’re driving up to a mountain, seeing its bright peak pop up in the distance is one of the most exhilarating feelings. Anticipating what you’ll find there is part of the fun, because a winter-white landscape can be so refreshing to the body and spirit during the grayest part of the year. Whether you [...]

Champagne and Ice on New Year’s Eve

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

An elegant toast at midnight following a multi-course feast in one of Portland’s finest restaurants, a festive show, or a day in the snow — how will you celebrate New Year’s Eve this year?  Personally, I always try to “do it all,” so I’ll be taking in Pink Martini’s annual gift to Portland in the [...]

Forktown Food Tours

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Jessica Kleiderman was so inspired by the wealth of good food in Portland’s neighborhoods that she started a tour company to share that wealth, and called it Forktown. Any foodie who’s been here knows that the abundance of craft artisans (chocolatiers, bakers, cheesemakers, distillers, brewers …) in Portland is unparalleled. And some of the most interesting [...]

Spirit of 77

Monday, November 1st, 2010

What kind of sports bar can make regulars out of people who don’t really like sports? One created by the creative minds behind the Ace Hotel, that’s what kind. As mentioned last week, Spirit of 77* recently opened in close-in Northeast Portland. It has a really fun, happening vibe, and very cool design touches. Share [...]
